Itโ€™s almost Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year! This holiday brings the freshness of fall, delicious honey cakes, and thoughts of new beginnings.

Even without a religious background, I love the spiritual aspect of Rosh Hashanah, when you are invited to reflect on your past year. What can you do to make this year a โ€œShana Tovaโ€ (โ€˜a good yearโ€™)? Thatโ€™s a nice discussion to have with your kids as you prepare for Rosh Hashanah. And to make it more fun, add a Rosh Hashanah craft!ย

How to Make a Shana Tova Pop-Up Card

What Youโ€™ll Need:

  • The printable Shana Tova pop up card template (available here)
  • White cardstock for printers
  • Colorful cardstock sheet for printers (or regular colorful cardstock)
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Coloring tools
  • Ruler and butter knife for scoring (optional)

Make the Shana Tova Card:

1. Print out pages 1-3 of the printable template on white cardstock and color the illustrations.

4. Fold the cardโ€™s base in half along the dashed line. TIP: To make folding easy, score the lines first: place a ruler along the dashed lines, and pass gently over the lines with the dull edge of a butter knife to make a soft crease.

5. Fold the strips backward along the dashed lines.

6. Find where each strip needs to go by matching the letters on the glue tabs with the letters on the cardโ€™s base. Note that tabs โ€˜Iโ€™ and โ€˜Kโ€™ go on top of the bannerโ€™s strips.

7. Glue the strips in their places. Make sure their text side is facing forward. Once you are done, fold the card to check that all the strips bend properly.

8. Spread glue where it says โ€œglue banner hereโ€ on both right and left strips. Attach the banner to these strips (choose a banner in English or in Hebrew).

Note: avoid spreading glue over the dashed lines, as these lines need to fold freely.

Fold the card to ensure it closes smoothly and that the banner is not sticking out of the folded card. Then press the banner to secure it in place.

9. Glue the apple, honey, dove, and the shofar to their marked places on the strips.

12. Next, weโ€™ll add colorful cardstock to the cardโ€™s backside:

  1. Print page 4 of the template on colorful cardstock and cut along the marked lines. If you donโ€™t have colorful cardstock for printers, print on regular paper, trace the shape onto colorful cardstock, and cut it out.
  2. Fold the cutout cardstock along the center (marked in the template with a dashed line).
  3. Spread glue on the back of the card and glue it to the colorful cardstock, aligning the central folds of both parts.
  4. Open and close the card to ensure all elements move freely.
