Do you also have tones of advertising magnets on your fridge? I’m not even sure where did all of these magnets come from and how they formed such prospering magnet communities right under my nose. All I know is that every few months I find myself harvesting magnets from my fridge’s door.
I don’t like the look of advertising magnets wallpaper, but I also don’t like to throw these magnets away. If you think about it, magnets are useful craft materials that you would have to pay for in the craft store.
That’s why I like to take old and ugly magnets and turn them into cute ones. My latest DIY magnet is this very simple unicorn which I created out of EVA foam sheet. I drew a template so it would be easier to cut the foam and so that I could use it later for other crafts.
Here is the step by step tutorial for making this magnet, including the template for printing. By the way, you don’t have to turn your unicorn into a magnet, you can also use it as a gift tag,
I added the template that I drew and used to make mine.
What you’ll need:
EVA foam sheets in different colors
scissors
white glue
large magnet
glitter paper/glitter sticker paper (optional)
paper punch (optional)
a print of this downloadable template
STEP 1
Print out the template and cut out the parts.
STEP 2
Place each part on EVA foam of your desired color and trace the margins with a pencil.
STEP 3
Cut the shapes out of the foam sheets.
STEP 4
Glue the pieces to the unicorn’s base.
STEP 5
Use a paper punch to punch a shape out of glittery paper. Glittery is fun, but you can use any kind of paper (or skip this step completely. your unicorn – your rules).
STEP 6
Glue the punched shape onto the unicorn (remember My Little Pony? I loved it 🙂 )
STEP 7
Take the large piece of magnet. I used a big advertisement magnet that I had at home.
Use the paper template of the unicorn’s base and trace it onto the back of the magnet.
Important: make sure you place the paper facing the right direction, or the magnet won’t fit your foam unicorn. I lost a good piece of magnet because of this mistake -_-.
STEP 8
Glue the magnet to the back of the unicorn. It’s OK if the magnet is smaller than the unicorn or doesn’t cover the foam evenly. All that matters is that it covers enough of the surface to make the unicorn magnetize properly.
AND – HOORAY!
You have an adorable magnet to put on the fridge or chalkboard.
