DIY Back to School Time Capsule – What’s Inside?

Here is what you’ll find in the printable Back to School Time Capsule Kit:

1. A Printable Box: Kids can easily print, cut, and assemble the box for their time capsule. The box is decorated with space and school themed cartoons, and has a place for the owner’s name and signature, to make it personal.

2. Nine Pages of Fun Prompts: Each page is decorated with colorful designs and includes meaningful prompts, such as ‘My Goals for the School Year’, ‘I Am Excited About..’, ‘Special Memory (to write or draw)’, and for an extra challenge – ‘A Secret Message to My Future Self’ with a letter code!

The cartoons in this DIY Back to School Time Capsule come from clip art sets available in my shop.

The Back to School Clipart Set has kawaii school supply items (with and without kawaii faces), and the Space Clipart Set includes colorful space-themed illustrations of astronauts, planets, and aliens. Create your Back to School Time Capsule

Creating this DIY Back to School Time Capsule is easy. Get the kids and let’s do it together:

Materials Needed*:

• Printable time capsule kit (fill the form at the end of this page to download it)
• White card stock for printers (for the box)
• Normal paper for printers
• Glue
• Scissors
• Writing or coloring tools

Steps:

1. Print the box template (pages 1-2 in the PDF) on white card stock, and the rest of the pages on regular white paper.

2. Cut out all the parts (nine pages to fill in, and two parts of the box). The cutting lines are marked with scissor icons.

3. Fill in the prompts on the printable pages. Take your time to think, write, draw, and place a chosen photo.

4. Prepare the box:

First, write down the details in the designated place on the box. 

Fold the box template along the dashed lines. TIP: It’s easier to fold if you score first. To score, place a ruler along the dashed lines and trace them with the dull edge of a butter knife. This will create soft creases.

Connect both parts of the box: Spread glue on the tab that says ‘Glue box’s other part here’. Attach the edge of the other box part (marked in the template with ‘This edge connects to the box’s other part’). Align the edges of both parts and press to secure.

Spread glue on the four GLUE TABS, then align these tabs with the matching sides of the box to close it up.

5. Put all your filled-in pages inside the box. You can roll the pages like scrolls, fold them, or place them in little envelopes.

6. Once you are done, seal your time capsule, hide it in a safe place, and wait to open it again next year!
